The process of reading is multifaceted, which only develops through explicit instruction and practice. Learners must develop a solid foundation of literacy knowledge, which will allow for automaticity and fluency in reading and writing. The basic framework of literacy acquisition can be divided into three main aspects: learning the code, making meaning and thinking critically. These aspects are essential to acquire if students are to become successful literacy learners. The Ministry of Education, 2006, states that at the basic level, learning the code effectively means, developing the skills to encode and decode written forms of language. They furthermore explain that as children become more advanced, they begin to develop and increase their vocabulary, building up to identifying and engaging in more complex structures and features of text.
